Manchester United's Opportunity: Securing Amadou Onana for £43m, the Ideal Casemiro Replacement

Manchester United have the opportunity to secure Everton midfielder Amadou Onana for £43 million in the upcoming transfer window. With several changes expected in the squad this summer, acquiring a new defensive midfielder could be a priority for the Red Devils.

Casemiro’s second season with United was underwhelming, marked by injuries and inconsistency, culminating in his absence from the FA Cup final due to injury. In our view, Onana could serve as an ideal replacement for the former Real Madrid player.

According to Sport (page 9), Everton’s need to balance their books after a failed takeover presents United with the chance to sign Onana. The 22-year-old, praised as “really exciting” by manager Roberto Martinez, has been a key figure for Everton since joining from Lille in 2022.

Onana had an impressive 2023/24 season, winning six duels per game and boasting a 74% success rate in aerial duels. Additionally, he averaged 2.4 successful tackles and 5.3 recoveries per game while maintaining possession well and being dribbled past minimally.

In comparison, Casemiro struggled with possession loss and defensive positioning, making Onana appear as an upgrade, especially considering his £43 million price tag, which could be considered a bargain.

However, United must act swiftly to secure Onana, as Barcelona and Arsenal are also interested in the versatile midfielder, who not only provides defensive solidity but also poses a threat from set-pieces due to his height (6ft. 5in). He would undoubtedly be a valuable addition to United’s squad.
