Manchester City Contemplates Midfield Overhaul: Two Players on the Chopping Block

Manchester City is considering reshaping its midfield, with reports emerging that two players could be on their way out of the club to make room for new acquisitions.

Matheus Nunes, the Portugal international signed from Wolverhampton Wanderers for £53 million last summer, is reportedly available for transfer. Despite his significant transfer fee, Nunes has struggled to cement his place in Pep Guardiola’s squad, making only a handful of Premier League starts and failing to find the net for the Cityzens.

Sources close to the club suggest that Manchester City is open to offers for Nunes, with interest reportedly coming from clubs in Saudi Arabia. While Paris Saint-Germain and Barcelona have previously shown interest in the midfielder, the immediate attention seems to be from clubs in the Middle East.

Nunes’ lack of regular first-team opportunities is attributed to the fierce competition in Manchester City’s midfield, where established stars like Kevin De Bruyne, Bernardo Silva, and Phil Foden dominate the lineup.

Another midfielder facing potential departure is Kalvin Phillips, who, despite being a high-profile signing, has also struggled to meet expectations at the Etihad Stadium.

In the quest to strengthen the midfield, Guardiola had initially targeted West Ham’s Lucas Paqueta. However, complications arose due to alleged betting rule violations, leading to uncertainties around the potential transfer. With Paqueta’s future uncertain, Manchester City could shift their focus to Newcastle United’s Bruno Guimaraes.

Guimaraes, known for his impressive performances at Newcastle, boasts a £100 million release clause in his contract, which expires on June 30. Several top European clubs are reportedly considering triggering his release clause, presenting Manchester City with a viable option to bolster their midfield.
