As one of the most exciting defensive midfielders in European football, there are many clubs intrigued by Benfica starlet Florentino Luis. The midfielder, nicknamed ‘The Octopus’, has gained interest from the likes of AC Milan and Real Madrid. However, this summer it looks like a move to England could take place. The 21-year-old has been linked with Fulham, but also with perennial Portuguese hotspot Wolverhampton Wanderers.
Reports in Portugal claim that the player could be set for a move to England on a season-long loan deal with the option to buy for a fee of around £25-30m. Having been mooted for stardom for a few years now, Luis has broken into the Benfica side and has become a relative mainstay. However, the club is in need of a rejuvenation and the arrival of Jorge Jesus means funds have to be found to bring in the calibre of talent expected.
This could mean sacrificing a young academy starlet to make the funds available for other signings. Though known to be highly rated by returning coach Jesus, Luis could be seen as one of the more expendable options if it comes with the promise of a large cash investment in the future.
An excellent ball winner and a crisp passer, Luis has made a reputation for himself in Portugal as one of the next generation of talented graduates. With a move to England likely to come this summer, English fans might get to see why the player has become among the most highly rated young players in his position.
