As one of the most dominant central defenders in the world in recent years, it’s no surprise that eyes are on Kalidou Koulibaly. The Senegal international has been a standout since he arrived in Italy from Belgian football, becoming a figurehead of Napoli and their recent success in previous seasons. However, it looks like his time in Italy might be coming to an end.
At the time of writing, he has been linked with three major northern clubs in England. The most prominent link is with Manchester United, who are known to desire a powerful defender to partner Harry Maguire and help keep them tight at the back. However, likely league champions Liverpool are also keen, as he’s seen as the ideal complement to the technical quality of Virgil van Dijk.
Another team heavily linked from England is likely to be newly-minted Newcastle United. The Toon would be the most surprising move for the Senegalese, as they represent a step down as opposed to a step up. However, reports suggest that Koulibaly might be excited by the idea of being the figurehead of a whole new team being built around him.
Time will tell if any moves come to fruition as the fiscal belts are likely to be tightened for all. Koulibaly, though, has been more vocal in the 2019-20 season about a future away from Naples so it could be this summer that finally sees him take on a move to England.
